San Jose, Calif., December 5, 2006 – On October 21, EAA Chapter 62 their third and final Young Eagles rally for the year at South County Airport. The Chapter’s event was organized by Allen Roark, Young Eagle coordinator, with plenty of help from a dedicated ground crew, volunteers and pilots.
An outstanding 67 children flew with 14 pilots and were organized by the ground crew including Dottie Moriarity, Russ Todd and Jasmine Parker helping direct airplanes, registering Young Eagles and pairing them up with pilots ready to fly at the event.
Pilots Gary Garrett, Pat Greco, Andy Werback, Jeff West, Russ Todd Sr., Gary Niva, Rusty Wells, Mark Kadrich, Jim MacKnight, Mark Sochan, Yaron Ekshtein, Michael Shebanow, Richard Moriarity, Randy Wilde and Lee Murlin flew the Young Eagles. Roger Kopp, Howard Rogers, Pat Johnson, Bob Kindlund, Tom Monti, Jasmine Parker and Ernie Parker were ground control and escorted them in and out of the planes.
Jeff West flew kids and also took the time to help them build Wing Ribs, keeping the Wing Rib Booth busy all day long. Robert Kindlund, Roger Kopp and Howard Rogers worked on the Wing Ribs along with directing planes as well.
Russell Todd, ground crew member and son of Russ Todd Sr., saw a need in the program and wanted to make a contribution to the Young Eagles. He designed a computer program and printed out all 67 Young Eagle certificates to not only make the process easier but to produce equivalent elegant lettering on the certificates given to each Young Eagle. He arrived at the field early and set up three network computers and a printer, which allowed Young Eagles to register on two of the computers, while the third was used by the ground crew to assign pilots and print out certificates.
Chapter President Terri Gorman provided sandwiches, chicken and drinks for all of the pilots and crew when it came time to eat. Everyone had a great outdoor picnic eating and talking about the airplanes.
Magnum Aviation also provided discounted fuel to the pilots for the event.
