Fremont, Mich. – November 4, 2005 – For eight years and counting, members of EAA Chapter 578 have been offering a unique opportunity to international students at the Fremont Municipal Airport.
On Friday, October 28, Max Lee, flying his 1958 Cessna 172 and Jack Smith in his 1964 Cessna 172, took more than 20 students from Japan on EAA Young Eagles flights. Fremont and Yahaba, Japan, are “sister” cities in a student exchange program. Each year the students are given the opportunity to become Young Eagles.
“We have a great time with the Japanese students despite the obvious language problems,” Lee said. “They are so polite on the ground and show outstanding visual enthusiasm during the actual flight.”
The rest of the year, when the chapter members aren’t flying students from Japan, they are dedicated to flying young people in their community. Several of the Young Eagles the chapter has flown over the years would not have gotten the opportunity to experience flight without Young Eagles and have now gone on to aviation careers of their own.
For Lee, who recommends that all EAA Chapters make Young Eagles a priority chapter function says, “The best part about flying Young Eagles for me is introducing youngsters to the wonderful world of flight. Also, just seeing their faces and enthusiasm is worth all the effort that we put in. They always have a lot of fun because they sincerely enjoy becoming Young Eagles and this is equally matched by our fun and good feeling!”
