Annapolis, Md., November 16, 2006 – It was a beautiful fall day on the Chesapeake Bay for the Young Eagles rally conducted by EAA Chapter 571 (Annapolis, MD) on Oct. 21.
Despite operating within the infamous Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), the rally got off the ground without trouble. The ADIZ opperates as a national defense boundary for air traffic, requiring aircraft that plan to fly over its boundary to file a Defense Visual Flight Rules (DVFR) flight plan or an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flight plan before doing so. But, EAA Chapter 571 received great cooperation from the Potomac TRACON ATC facility, which issued its four aircraft pre-assigned squawk codes. This made the trips a non-issue for all concerned.
Six children participated in the rally and each had a great time. This group also included several CAP cadets whose group is based at Lee Airport. Three parents were also flown and enjoyed it as much as the kids. Young Eagle Evan Skinner wanted to know when he could go again.
EAA Chapter 571 President Bruce Raymond was able to fly with his grandson, Jack Raymond, who was all smiles after his flight over the Chesapeake Bay in a RV-8.
Pilot Matt Jurotich provided a ride for Matt Clifford and his son Matt. Denny Workman, Chapter 571’s Young Eagle Coordinator, and Peter Van Dine provided other airplanes.
Plenty of ground crew support was available throughout the day from members including Art Kudner, Dick Kuszyk, Ed Demeter, Paul Burns, George Kuehn and Brian Dempsy.
