Center Grove High School Math and Science Project

By Karen Reich

Greenwood, Ind. – November 17, 2005 – Departing from Greenwood Municipal Airport on November 1, Center Grove High School students took to the skies as part of an exciting educational program. The Center Grove High School Math and Science Project is demonstrating practical applications of math and science to students.

Working in conjunction with the EAA Young Eagles program, Roger Tomey of EAA Chapter 1354, Center Grove High School teachers Becki Meier, Jim Williams, and Penny Ratliff, Vice President of Chapter 1354 and Assistant Chief Flight Instructor for Greenwood Aviation, Inc., came up with the flight and classroom program.

As the students fly over Johnson County they are learning about math and geography. Throughout the flight, the students take pictures of their township. Afterward, once a film is developed, the classroom portion begins.

The students use their flight experience to study and discuss topography and the township layout. They also calculate weight and balance problems, and figure fuel burn and wind component issues. Following the flight, they also each write a report about aviation and about their individual flight experiences becoming a Young Eagle.

The program began last year with 68 students taking part and with about the same number this year, the program is a great success.
