Oshkosh to Host Historic Aircraft and People

EAA Aviation Center, Oshkosh, Wis. – July 5, 2005 - First Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie made world headlines by becoming the first and second to fly to outer space and back in the world’s first commercial spacecraft. Then, Steve Fossett flew around the world solo without stopping on the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer.

One man and company was responsible for all those aircraft — Burt Rutan’s Scaled Composites.

This is your chance to see these aircraft before they’re hung permanently in the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The aircraft and the people responsible for creating them will be at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, which runs from July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

SpaceShipOne and its carrier plane White Knight will arrive at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 25, while GlobalFlyer will arrive at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26.

But that’s not all. EAA AirVenture will also feature:

  • A reunion of World War II bombers to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The gathering will feature five B-17s, several B-25s, a B-24 and the only airworthy B-29 in the world.
  • A Lockheed P-38 Lightning named "Glacier Girl" that was recovered part by part from under the Greenland ice cap after 50 years. The last time it came to Oshkosh, in 1992, it was just a collection of aircraft parts.
  • The only existing Dornier Do-24ATT will be on display. The tri-motor flying boat was designed in the 1930s by German aircraft pioneer Claudius Dornier, who was commissioned by the Dutch government to build an amphibious aircraft for use in their colonies.
  • The Eclipse 500, a new private jet expected to revolutionalize air travel when it enters the marketplace next year, will also make its first public flight appearance as a prelude to the afternoon air show on July 27.

And that’s still not all. There’s KidVenture, the daily air show, forums, speakers and tons of usual planes — everything from tiny ultralights to massive military transports.

Don’t make an excuse. This year you’ve just got to be there!
