Young Eagles Award Celebration Set

EAA Headquarters, Oshkosh, Wis. – June 18, 2008 – The annual Young Eagles award ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday evening, July 30 during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Following on last year’s successful event, the awards will be presented in the EAA AirVenture Museum’s Eagle Hangar. In addition to recognizing outstanding Young Eagle volunteers, the event will highlight the 25 years of the EAA Air Academy.

“Since 1993, we have been recognizing the outstanding volunteers who support Young Eagles throughout the year,” said Steve Buss, Young Eagles Executive Director. “Selecting the recipients becomes more difficult each year because of the tremendous dedication and creative EAA members have for the program. It is a tough, but enjoyable process.”

Joining Buss to present the Young Eagle awards will be
Harrison Ford, Young Eagles Chairman. Ford, known to many for his film work, is also an accomplished pilot and has flown nearly 300 Young Eagles since joining EAA in the mid-90s.

This year’s event will also highlight one of EAA’s other well-known youth programs, the EAA Air Academy. The Air Academy was launched in 1984.

“The original concept was to bring kids and volunteers together to build an airplane,” said Scott Cameron, Camp Director. “That first year, the Academy ran for 21 days and had 36 campers. The idea was to teach the campers the techniques of aircraft building and then allow them to put that learning into action.”

Since then the Air Academy has expanded – both figuratively and literally. Academy sessions are now held throughout the summer and are targeted to different age groups, from 12 – 18. In addition, the Academy has a permanent home at the spacious Air Academy Lodge. Annually 300 young people attend the Air Academy.

“We are looking forward to this celebration,” said Bob Campbell, EAA’s Director of Residence Camps. “We’ve invited former staff and counselors and Academy alumni to come back and join us for the event. We’re looking forward to recognizing many of them.”

The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. in the Eagle Hangar with a “Wisconsin-style” cook-out. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Following the program, guests are invited to the Air Academy Lodge for dessert.

Admission to the event is free, but tickets are required.
