Warner flies solo

Gettysburg, Penn. - January 3, 2007 – Sixteen-year-old former EAA Young Eagle Ryan Warner made his first solo flight on Oct. 21, 2006, in an Aeronca 7AC Champ at Bermudian Valley Airpark.

Heavy rains prevented Ryan from flying a few days earlier on his actual 16th birthday. With family and friends on hand to help celebrate, Ryan took flight on Saturday, Oct. 21. He received his EAA Young Eagle flight with pilot Bobbie McBee in September 2000 and attended the 2005
EAA Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wis. Ryan was the first to obtain a sponsorship to attend the academy through EAA chapter 1041, the Gettysburg Barnstormers. He started his flight training after returning from the Air Academy is 2005

Ryan is the son of Clark and Valerie Warner of York Springs, Penn. He is a sophomore at Bermudian Springs High School and plans to pursue a career in aviation as a pilot afterwards.

Ryan’s family has a long connection to aviation. His late grandfather, John Adams, was a well-known local aviator and mechanic who helped establish the Gettysburg Air Explorer Post in the 1970s.

EAA Chapter 1041, The Gettysburg Barnstormers, is a group of area pilots and aviation enthusiasts. Originally based at the Hanover Airport in Conewago Township, the group moved to
Gettysburg in 1998 and currently has 60 members. The group reaches out to youth, travels around the country and introduces others to the joys of flying as well.

Flight instructor, Tom Harry, is shown holding Ryan’s freshly cut shirttail, a first solo tradition, which now adorns the pilot’s lounge at Bermudian Valley Airpark.
