Flying for a Good Cause

Wisconsin – June 26, 2006 – Two pilots, one airplane, one day and 104 airports.

All to raise money for the
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

It was called
Romp Around Wisconsin. And it was quite the flight. On June 20, two pilots, EAA members Bruce Kaufman and Matthew McDaniel, flew a Cirrus SR-22 single engine airplane and landed at all public, paved airports in Wisconsin, as well as the Air National Guard Base at Volk Field and one private airport, to raise funds for programs at the Milwaukee hospital by establishing a national flying record. While the national flying record is yet to be confirmed, they did raise $10,900 as of June 24 — already $900 over their goal.

Kaufman, medical director, neurosurgery, at Children’s Hospital, and McDaniel, owner of Progressive Aviation Services, wrote on the “Romp” Web site that they did it for the children.

“As medical director of pediatric neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital, I am inspired by the children and families I meet, their strength, and their courage,” Kaufman wrote. “Clearly, their actions encourage all of us to enjoy life to the fullest.”

Romp around Wisconsin combined their love of flying with their devotion to children, they wrote.

After 17 hours and 2,119 nautical miles, they landed at their 104th and final Wisconsin airfield at 9:15 pm.

The June 20 flight was actually their second attempt,
Aero-News Network reported, when bad weather halted their attempt after 40 airports. Unlike the last attempt, "[t]he weather gods were smiling on us for sure," the men wrote to ANN. "Lots of strong weather to contend with, but just as we'd get to the edge of it, our routing would have us turning and going away from it."
