Fossett Off On Another Adventure

The Latest Flight Update

Salina, Kansas – March 15, 2006 – It was only a month ago that Steve Fossett broke the world record for longest nonstop flight — traveling 26,389 miles in 76 hours and 45 minutes in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer.

Evidently, Fossett needed another challenge.

Already.

The millionaire adventurer is attempting to break the closed circuit distance record, beginning and ending at the same point.

Fossett took off Tuesday morning at 6:38 a.m. from the Salina Municipal Airport in Kansas. His route will be similar to the path he followed last year, but this time he’ll fly the GlobalFlyer on a slightly longer round-the-world course to break the closed-course record, currently held by Burt Rutan and Jeana Yeager.

Rutan and Yeager flew the Voyager 24,931 miles as they circumnavigated the world, nonstop, without refueling in 1986, taking off and landing at Edward’s Air Force Base in California.

Besides setting another world record, Fossett’s flight also spotlights the aviation department at Kansas State University in Salina. K-State students, faculty and staff are providing the leadership and infrastructure for mission control, as well as handling the Web site maintenance and mission updates throughout the flight.

"It is no wonder that Steve has asked our students to be involved in this project," Dennis Kuhlman, dean of the university’s Salina campus, said in a release. "He strives to encourage and inspire young people to work hard and achieve their dreams, and this is a tremendous opportunity for our students to be a part of a very inspiring project.”
