Hilo, Hawaii – March 3, 2006 – The 6th Annual Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day took place at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, on January 28 2006. The event is held in special tribute to Onizuka, a NASA Astronaut and Lt. Col. in the U.S. Air Force.
This event is open to students in grades four through 10, their parents, and teachers of any grade level. Jim Phillips, President of EAA Chapter 1182, led and organized his Chapter’s participation. Kori Haymore set up a display titled “How is an Airplane Different from a Car?” and Phillips constructed a flight simulator with yoke and rudder pedals for the kids to use.
There were 18 science workshops and 12 displays for people to enjoy. Astronaut Robert Curbeam, a veteran of two space shuttle flights, was present as the keynote speaker.
The display has been turned into an animated slideshow for viewing. It Is an animation of a simple airplane moving in all six degrees of freedom. Click here to download the files.
