EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
Who was the first American woman to fly an airplane?
Jennifer

Answer :
Hi Jennifer,

On Sep 2, 1910, Blanche Scott became the first American woman pilot to fly solo. She flew a Curtiss airplane to an altitude of about 40 feet.

As an interesting side note, Scott was also the first American woman to ride in a jet aircraft. On September 6, 1948, she flew with Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager in a TF-80C. Chuck Yeager was also the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947.

Blanche Scott also worked for the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, beginning in 1954. She was a traveling public relations unit, seeking items related to early flight for that museum's collection.

Blanche Stuart Scott passed away on January 12, 1970. She was a member of the 'Early Birds', the 'OX-5 Club' and the 'Long Island Early Fliers Club'.
