EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
How much does it cost to build an airplane? Nick

Answer :
Hi Nick,

The cost to build your own airplane varies tremendously. It can range from a few thousand dollars for an Ultralight (a very simple aircraft) to several hundred thousand dollars for a high-speed, all-weather airplane with a powerful engine.

I am building an all-aluminum plane from a kit made by Van's Aircraft, called an "RV". Mine is an RV-7A. Even the cost of building an RV-7A can vary from as little as about $25,000 for a basic airplane to $150,000 (or more) for one built from a Quick Build kit. In a Quick Build kit, some of the major parts of the airplane come already assembled. It saves time, but costs more. Another factor is cost is the engine you select and the other accessories you choose, like radios, navigation equipment, engine instruments and even the material for the seats. I'd guess the "average" for an RV is about $60,000.

If you're interested in seeing the details of building an airplane, visit my web site: http://www.meyette.us/RV-7Ahome.htm There are also links there to many other builders' web sites.
