EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
Do you have to get straight A's to be an airline pilot?

Answer :
No, you do not have to get straight "A's" to be an airline pilot. I could stop with that statement, but I won't. Airline hiring is a competitive thing. The more qualifications that you have, the better off you are. College education is a requirement for most airline pilot positions, but even this requirement has been waived in the past when hiring is very heavy. When hiring is slow, everything matters, the younger you are the better, the more hours of flying that you have the better, the more experience you have-the better.
Good grades in school will help in a couple of ways, one is to pick a major of study that is not tied to being a pilot. This way if you lose your medical and need to go back to work, you have something else to fall back on. Also, good grades can make you stand out from the crowd and may get you "looked at" sooner than another candidate.
Good luck in your career,
Dick Keyt
