EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
When do you and don't you use a g-suit? For instance do air show pilots
(short duration g's) and/or high performance military pilots (high g's longer
duration) use them?

Answer :
G-suits are required for USAF fighter pilots on all flights expect ferry
flights. USAF Fighter Pilots wear them (and the g-vest) any time they fly a
training mission, combat mission or air demonstration. Civilian
demonstration pilots (like USAF reserve pilot Ed "Hamster" Hamill in his
Pitts) do not wear g-suits, because their planes do not have the equipment
to "inflate" the g-suit. You are also correct, that while air show pilots do pull g's
equivalent to fighter pilots, their aircraft are not capable of sustained
g's and that is where the g-suit helps the most.

Retired USAF F-16 Pilot
Southwest Airlines Pilot
