EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
I pulled 2 G's and it was a lot of force! How can pilots stand to pull a lot of G's?

Answer :
Good question. As an air show pilot, I have to train each year to build up my tolerance to G forces. It can take a long time to get your conditioning back, especially if you lay off for more than a few weeks or a month.
The only way to condition yourself is to train, train, train and burn lots of fuel. For the first week or two, you're just exhausted at the end of the day (it's a good tired though), then it gets easier. You have to build up slowly, especially for negative G's, and just push a little harder every day.
G's also seem to lower your blood sugar, so you have to change your diet a bit, eating more carbs and things like orange juice which have natural sugar in them....

So, it's a matter of practice, practice, practice....!
