EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
How do you become an astronaut?

Answer :
The basic requirements to apply to become an astronaut are to have a degree in math, science or engineering from an accredited university. So first, go to college and get a degree in one of these fields. Remember that only a very few are selected for astronaut duty so you should choose a career that you will enjoy and then try to become an astronaut.

Of the current astronauts, 70% have degrees in engineering. Many have advanced degrees - masters or doctorates. So more education is better.

If you go to the NASA web site and look at astronaut biographies, you will see many common themes in their backgrounds so doing some of the same things can help when you apply for a job as astronaut. Flying, SCUBA diving, athletics, and other activities are common and are the type things that help with doing the job so are good activities to learn.

The best thing you can do is excel at everything you do - make good grades, do a good job for your employer, be a good citizen - and you will succeed in life.

There are many rewarding careers in the space field, so go to college, then you can work for our Nation's space program, and if you are one of the lucky ones, you will get to become an astronaut.
