Question
: What does the International Space Station (ISS) look like in the night sky?
Answer : When the ISS (or space shuttle) passes overhead and the lighting conditions are right, it will appear like a bright star. However, unlike a star, it will be moving across the sky. It will appear to move at about the same speed as a commercial airliner. The biggest difference is that the ISS won't have any position lights or strobes and you won't hear any sound, either.
I have seen ISS and the shuttle many times through the years. NASA's site helps you track exactly when the ISS will pass over. It is neat to see it fly overhead. Plus as ISS continues to add new panels and modules, it gets even larger and easier to see.
