Question
: Why can't the FAA allow ultralight manufacturers to build larger gas tanks, like 15-25 gallons? The one I am currently training in only has a 10 gallon tank.
Answer : The FAA regulations that allow Ultralight vehicles offer a unique opportunity for people to fly these very light aircraft without pilot certificates or airworthiness certificates. In order to take advantage of these unique privileges, people who operate these vehicles must be willing to live within the parameters allowed. These parameters allow only a 5-gallon fuel capacity for Ultralight vehicles, and a 10-gallon capacity for Ultralight trainers. If the pilot wishes to have more capacity than that, they must move up to an aircraft that holds some sort of FAA airworthiness certificate.
