EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
What would happen if a plane broke the sound barrier over a sub-division? Would the pilot be disciplined? Josh

Answer :
Hi Josh,

If a plane broke the sound barrier over a sub-division there would probably be a lot of upset people because of the loud noise that occurs when something goes faster than the speed of sound!

Let me start by saying there are only a few civilian-owned aircraft that are capable of breaking the sound barrier. Military jets have the capability, but they are restricted as to where they can fly such operations, like out over the ocean or the desert.

Just like driving on the streets in your car, there are rules for airplanes in the sky. If they break those rules "by speeding" they will be given a warning or ticket by the proper authorities, either the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, or by the pilot's branch of the military.

Thanks!
