EAA Young Eagles - Ask the Expert

Question :
Do you have to be really good at math to be a fighter pilot?

Answer :
The short answer is not really. I flew fighters for 20 years in the USAF and was an Aerospace Engineer, however I flew with many other fighter pilots who did not have technical degrees. All fighter pilots are officers in the military and are college graduates. But the military does not care if you have a history degree or engineering degree, you can be a good fighter pilot (or other military pilot) based on your flying abilities. A certain aptitude for mechanical or mathematic concepts helps, but is not required. Thanks for your question.

Lt Col (ret) Mike Carter, USAF
