EAA AirVenture Oshkosh – August 1, 2007 – You can’t see it anywhere at this point. But crowds who watched Speed and Angels at screenings last week during EAA AirVenture 2007 said it was a winner.
The 1 1/2-hour documentary, rated PG-13 because of language, was shown throughout the convention and air show in the SkyScape Theater at the EAA AirVenture Museum.
“It’s a great movie,” said Ada Younkin, of Springdale, Arkansas. “I liked its promotion of women in aviation, and how it shows that women can do anything if they put their mind to it.”
Younkin said she also enjoyed the flying and photography in the documentary, which shows the emotional journey of training and becoming a Navy fighter pilot. The photography, both in and out of the cockpit, makes it seem that you’re landing on an aircraft carrier or dogfighting in an F-14 Tomcat.
“I really liked the human factor,” said Larry Bass of Denver. “It didn’t just show how everything was perfect. It included their screw-ups, their doubts, and encouragement from their families. It was very real life.”
Steve Bass, of Seattle, agreed, and said the lesson learned in the film — mainly perseverance — applies to many aspects of life. “It’s really a film about challenges and how your passion can help overcome those challenges.”
Francesco (Paco) Chierici, the documentary’s producer and screenwriter, said they wanted the film shown at Oshkosh because it really is a story about the passion of flying. Chierici, who attended AirVenture, also commanded the Fighting Saints of VFC-13 and is in the film.
For the moment, you can’t see the documentary anywhere. However, Chierici says they just signed a distribution deal with Salient Media, which will allow them to bring it to the masses. Tentatively, it will be released in theaters or on cable later this fall, with DVD sales to follow. For more information, click here.
