Red Bull Air Races Return

UPDATE Race One Results

Red Bull Air Races – March 14, 2007 – More is better, at least when it comes to the Red Bull Air Race World Series.

The 2007 season will include more races, more locations and more pilots than last year. That means more opportunities for spectators — estimated at 6 million in 2006 — to see the pilots and airplanes in action as they race through air pylons at speeds of more than 250 mph and endure forces of 10G as they do various aerobatic maneuvers knowing that the slightest miscue will cost them a win.

The 2007 season will bring 12 races, up four from 2006, and 14 pilots, up three. New locations include the famous
Botafogo Beach at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Interlaken in Switzerland against the backdrop of the spectacular Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau mountains, and San Diego, California, where the planes are set to take off from an aircraft carrier.

Pilots new to the competition include
Hannes Arch of Austria, Glen Dell of South Africa and Sergei Rakhmanin of Russia, who all qualified for this year’s series at a “Rookie Camp” held in the desert of Arizona last year. They will join 11 other returning pilots, including American world champions Mike Mangold, who took top honors in 2005 and third in 2006, and Kirby Chambliss, who won the series last year. In addition, American Mike Goulian, who placed fifth in the 2006 series, will again participate.

The World Series will take off on April 6 in
Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and will introduce a new ‘knockout’ final, with pilots competing against each other and only the fastest making it through to the next round.

Chambliss says he isn’t about to give up his world title. “My aim for 2007 is to win the championship again.”
