EAA Headquarters, Oshkosh, Wis. – January 3, 2007 – Are you one of few girls in your high school physics class? Or are you tired of having mainly male role models if you’re into technology more than shopping and Instant Messaging?
Thought so.
That’s why EAA is bringing back Women Soar – The Sky is Not the Limit 2007, a two-day program that showcases the possibilities available in math, science and technology fields.
The event will be held July 22-23 and coincide with the start of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Like last year, it will pair young women — those entering 8th to 12th grades — with female mentors who have accomplished amazing things in their fields.
Among them will be Anousheh Ansari, who in September 2006 became the first female private space explorer and the first astronaut of Iranian descent, when she flew on the Soyuz TMA-9 mission and spent eight days on the International Space Station. Ansari and her family also sponsored the $10 million Ansari X Prize, which recognized the pursuit of the first successful civilian space mission.
At the 2005 event, Ansari spoke to the atendees via telephone since she was in Moscow training.
"We're encouraging attendance by those who are thinking about what they want to do with their lives and introducing them to women in careers that many may never have considered," said Elissa Lines, EAA's vice president of development. "Women Soar will plant those seeds that may allow these girls to explore their own potential."
The program includes breakout sessions devoted to particular aviation and science pursuits, as well as presentations from female mentors representing aviation and industry. Parents and teachers are also welcome to attend.
Registration for students is $10 and scholarships are available. The registration fee includes dinner on Sunday, breakfast and lunch on Monday, and overnight camping, if desired. Girl Scouts of the Fox River Area will again coordinate the overnight camping for those interested.
In addition, participants can also attend the annual fly-in and convention.
As details are finalized, complete information and registration forms will be available here. Or call 1-800-236-1025 for more information.
