Perth, Australia, Nov. 20, 2006 – Third place was all it took Sunday to earn American Kirby Chambliss the Red Bull Air Race World Series championship.
Leading the competition with five points, Chambliss decided to play it safe at the series’ last stop, coming in third behind Hungarian Peter Besenyei and Britain’s Paul Bonhomme.
An estimated 250,000-300,000 spectators watched the competition from the banks of the Swan River in Perth, located in western Australia.
“Winning the Red Bull Air Race World Series has become my crowning achievement," Chambliss said. "There’s just no other series like it in the aviation sport.”
That’s an understatement. The Red Bull Air Races pits 11 pilots from seven countries against the clock, with each pilot performing a series of complex aerobatic maneuvers while flying through a series of inflatable pylon gates. Flying at speeds of over 250 mph and pulling high-G aerobatic maneuvers, the pilots have wowed more than 6 million spectators in Abu Dhabi, Barcelona, Berlin, St Petersburg, Istanbul, Budapest, San Francisco and Perth.
At the latest race, Besenyei finished in 02:39.78, followed by Bonhomme (02:40.37) and Chambliss (02:42.24). It was Besenyei’s second win of the season after his first place finish in Barcelona in May. Chambliss took first place in four of the World Series races.
“The chance for the title was very slim and that’s why I didn’t think about it,“ said Besenyei. “Victory in the season finale means a great deal to me. Seeing the hundreds of thousands of fans along the Swan River was an incredible experience, especially from the sky.”
Californian Mike Mangold, reigning World Series champion, finished in fourth place in Perth and earned third place in the World Series standings, and American Mike Goulian, of Massachusetts, came in sixth in Perth and fifth in the World Series.
