Chambliss Nears Series Victory

San Francisco, October 9, 2006 – American Kirby Chambliss won the Red Bull Air Race in San Francisco over the weekend, giving him his fourth win of the season and furthering his lead in the World Series standings.

With a total time of 02:39.83, Chambliss, an Arizona native, beat Hungarian Peter Besenyei by less than one-half of a second.
Paul Bonhomme of the UK finished third with 02:42.86, while Americans Mike Mangold, of California, and Michael Goulian, of Massachusetts, came in fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 02:43.33 and 02:49.02.

Mangold is the reigning World Series champion, although he is currently in third place in this year’s competition.

More than 400,000 spectators lined the shores of the San Francisco Bay to watch 11 pilots from seven countries perform high-speed and high-G aerobatic maneuvers through a series of pylon air gates located between the
Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. Pilots reached speeds of around 250 mph and faced forces of up to 10 Gs during the race.

“To win here you need everything – a great crew, a great plane and a good pilot,” Chambliss said, noting he could have flown more aggressively.

“I may have flown a little conservatively and that could have been a mistake. I only won by a half-second. It’s not really a fast course but it has its challenges. It’s high-G and longer duration G.”

With its tight twists and turns, the course is demanding and three pilots were disqualified for course deviation.

The air race was during
Fleet Week 2006, an annual waterfront celebration that honors the US Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

The final race of the Red Bull Air Race World Series takes place in
Perth, Australia on Nov. 19.
